Brian HaackGRAMMYs Apr 11, 2018 – 1:36 pm Business has been good for Gary Richards in 2018. Since parting ways with LiveNation – as well as his brainchild production company HARD Events, of which LN owns a controlling share – in Sept. 2017 to take over as President of North American events for LiveStyle, he has acted quickly to establish his new flagship events brand “All My Friends.” First up: a new summer music festival set to take place in downtown Los Angeles.Richards has been expertly teasing the rollout for the AMF brand with a series of activations and smaller events, first teeing up the inaugural voyage of Friend Ship cruise festival – which has already sold out almost a year before the event dates – then hosting a marathon day party during Miami Music Week under the “All My Friends” banner that kicked off at 5 a.m. and ran until midafternoon. The dance festival czar’s latest project will continue to expand his LiveStyle footprint with All My Friends Festival Los Angeles, set to take place in the large outdoor venue ROW LA (which L.A. natives might recognize as the home of the Smorgasburg weekly farmer’s market). The two-day event’s official lineup is still forthcoming, but the press release announcing the new venture promises three stages packed with futurebass, R&B and top tier hip-hop acts. All My Friends Festival Los Angeles will take place Aug. 18 – 19. Early-bird presale tickets will go on-sale on Apr. 12 at 9 a.m. Pacific. Labgrown meat Tastetesting chicken of the future

first_img Now playing: Watch this: So what does it actually taste like? The crunch from the breading and the smell from the fry was exactly what I expected from a good chicken nugget. But I was pleasantly surprised at how similar the cultured chicken itself tasted compared to the real deal, even if it didn’t look like your typical KFC or McDonald’s nugget. You can watch the video to find out more.Just’s next cultured meat product will be wagyu beef. Several other companies are also developing clean meat derived from animal cells, like Memphis Meats (chicken and duck) and SuperMeat (also chicken). If you’re hankering to try your own cultured chicken nugget, you’ll have to hold tight a little longer. The nugget needs to get USDA and FDA approval in the US, but Just says it’ll first be available in selected high-end restaurants in Asia later this year once it gets regulatory approval. The video on this page is an episode of Beta Test, the show that puts you in the front seat with me as I test out crazy tech products and experiences. Check back each month for a new show! You can also find the series on YouTube. Chicken nuggets usually get a pretty bad rap. Whether they’re filled with mystery meat or come with a mouthful of additives, they also involve slaughtering an animal. But the nugget I’m about to eat from San Francisco-based Just was grown in a lab, using cells taken from a living chicken. It’s cultured meat (and cruelty-free).Carnivores, breathe a sigh of relief.  Tags Unlike entirely plant-based products such as the Impossible Burger, the Just chicken nugget is actual meat.Cultured meat, also called lab-grown or clean meat, starts with the collection of cells, usually done through a biopsy so the animals aren’t harmed. Just says it has also been able to get cells from a chicken feather. The most viable cells are chosen and then given the right nutrients they need to grow in a bioreactor. In the case of this chicken nugget, those nutrients are plant-based.Not only does cultured meat avoid sacrificing animals, it could take fewer resources to produce than traditional livestock. Around 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are from livestock, according to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. But one study questions how environmentally friendly clean meat products could be if the process is energy-intensive.The chicken nugget once plated with Just’s plant-based mayo as a dipping sauce. CNET Just’s cultured chicken product takes around two weeks to grow in a bioreactor. The team of chefs plays a major part in creating the product once the scientists have developed the biology. “They are really the ones that can assemble everything and come up with the ideal ratios of cell types,” says Vitor Santo, director of cellular agriculture. Kim ends China visit as Trump summit looms

first_imgA limousine in the motorcade believed to be carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un travels to an entrance to Beijing Railway Station in Beijing, China on 9 January 2019. Photo: ReutersKim Jong Un’s train left Beijing on Wednesday after the North Korean leader visited his key ally on a trip seen as a strategy session ahead of his expected summit with Donald Trump.Kim arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for his fourth visit to Pyongyang’s sole major diplomatic friend, meeting president Xi Jinping and reportedly visiting a factory. The North Korean leader’s motorcade was spotted entering the Beijing central railway station on Wednesday afternoon, and the train departed shortly after on a day-long ride back to the northeast border, according to AFP journalists. The unannounced trip was largely shrouded in secrecy. Beyond confirming his presence in Beijing, no details have been provided by either North Korea or China on his schedule, with no coverage in state media even in the nightly news broadcast hours after the train’s departure.Kim met for one hour with Chinese president Xi Jinping on Tuesday — believed to be the North Korean leader’s birthday — and the two later dined with their wives at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.”Chairman Kim Jong Un’s visit to China was at the invitation of president Xi Jinping, of course president Xi would hold meetings and talks with him,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said at a regular press briefing, adding that more details would be released later.Tuesday’s meeting focused on Kim’s expected meeting with Trump, according to Yonhap. In a New Year speech, Kim warned that Pyongyang may change its approach to nuclear talks if Washington persists with sanctions.Relations between China and North Korea had deteriorated in recent years over Pyongyang’s nuclear activities, but Kim has made sure to keep Xi informed about his dealings with the United States and South Korea as ties appear to have warmed.”In order to resist the high pressure of the US, he must communicate with Xi in advance to see what steps he can take to deal with Trump,” Beijing-based independent political commentator Hua Po told AFP.”Kim needs the support of Xi so as to ask the US to make substantial steps, such as providing assistance to North Korea and normalising relations with North Korea.”Kim chose China for his maiden official trip abroad last year before holding meetings with South Korean president Moon Jae-in and Trump. The American leader said Sunday that the United States and North Korea are negotiating the location of their next summit.Discussions between the US and North Korea over Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal have stalled since Kim and Trump’s high-profile summit in Singapore in June where they issued a vaguely worded declaration about denuclearisation. The US insists that UN sanctions must remain in place until North Korea gives up its weapons, while Pyongyang wants them immediately eased. China also wants the sanctions to be relaxed.’Turning point’But Chinese officials also likely want to impress on Kim — who has so far pursued only limited reforms to his statist economy — the benefits the giant Communist country has enjoyed in its transformation from impoverished nation to economic powerhouse.Yonhap, citing unidentified sources, reported that Kim toured a factory operated by medicine firm Tongrentang for about half an hour in an economic zone in the Chinese capital. He then went to the Beijing Hotel, where he was expected to have lunch with Xi before his departure.”For North Korea itself, 2019 is his strategic turning point. If he wants to shift his focus to the development of the economy, he needs China’s cooperation,” said Lu Chao, a North Korea expert at China’s Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences. In the New Year speech, Kim focused on North Korea’s moribund economy, saying that improving people’s lives was his top priority and tackling energy shortages was an urgent task.Beijing-based analyst Hua said changes in the economic model will affect politics, “which poses new challenges to his control over the country.””For this point, he must ask for advice from China.”The visit coincided with negotiations between US and Chinese officials in Beijing to resolve a bruising trade war between the world’s two biggest economies. Some analysts say China could use its cooperation on the North Korean issue as a bargaining chip in the US trade talks. But Hua said Kim’s visit would have a “limited” effect on the trade negotiations.”The Sino-US trade negotiations are a matter between China and the US,” he said. “The weight of North Korea is limited and cannot play a decisive role.”last_img read more

Mamata as PM is not an isolated comment by BJP Somen Mitra

first_imgKolkata: West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra Monday said BJP president Dilip Ghosh’s comment that Mamata Banerjee has the best chance to become PM, is proof of “tacit understanding” between TMC and the BJP. “Dilip Ghosh’s statement that Mamata Banerjee has the best chance to become the first Bengali Prime Minister is not an isolated statement. It is a reflection of tacit understanding between both the parties in the state. We have been saying this for a long time but now the cat is out of the bag,” Mitra told reporters here. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal life Ghosh had, however, on Sunday made a U-turn and said his remark the day earlier on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s prime ministerial prospects was made in jest. Mitra termed Ghosh’s u-turn as a “lame excuse” and said that the people of the state very well understood the kind of “political setting” that exist between parties. Mitra claimed that by making the statement, Ghosh has virtually accepted that the BJP will not return to power in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and might extend support to Mamata Banerjee in such a scenario. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killed Commenting on the general strike called by various Left trade unions on January 8 and 9, Mitra said TMC’s opposition to the strike call is another example of ‘TMC-BJP fixed match’ in the state. “Why is she opposed to the strike call in the state? It is not against the state government. It is a nationwide strike call against the policies of the Modi government. This only proves that the TMC and BJP are both on the same page regarding economic policies and TMC’s call to fight against BJP is nothing but a farce,” he said. As many as 10 central trade unions have called a nationwide general strike on January 8 and 9, against the “anti-people” policies of the Centre and have placed a charter of 12 demands before the Centre. The demands include minimum wage, universal social security, workers’ status and including pay and facilities for the scheme workers, against privatisation of public and government organisations. Leaders and activists of various parties including TMC, Union Muslim League and CPI(M) Monday joined Congress and vowed to fight against the communal politics of TMC and BJP in the state.last_img read more

Pay TV in Africa to Double in Size by 2021

first_imgSouth Africa based MultiChoice, owned by Naspers remains the biggest pay-TV operator. Advertisement According to new research, the number of pay-television subscribers in Africa will reach 30 million by 2021, almost double 2015’s 16 million.Data published by Dataxis suggests digital satellite pay-TV subscribers will reach 20 million in five years’ time, compared to 8 million for digital terrestrial services. The company estimates that TV households, which stand at 114 million in 2015, will reach 159 million in 2021, still far below penetration rates elsewhere in the world. – Advertisement – “The low TV penetration rate is attributed to various socioeconomic factors that hinder adoption,” said Dataxis Africa research analyst Priscilla Tirvengadum.“Despite advances, statistics show that Africa still has a long way to go in terms of household TV penetration,” she said. “This low rate is explained mainly by lack of basic economic infrastructure like electricity. Moreover, poverty in developing African countries make it impossible for its citizens to afford for television sets.”[related-posts]English-speaking Africa is forecast to drive much of the growth over the next five years. Total pay TV subscribers in Anglophone countries is expected to double from 10 million in 2015, while Francophone Africa will grow from 3.5 million subscribers in 2015 to reach 6 million in 2021.Satellite pay-TV subscribers in English-speaking countries reached 8 million in 2015, and will grow to 12 million five years from now. South Africa-headquartered MultiChoice, which is owned by Naspers, remains the biggest pay-TV operator, followed by StarTimes and Zuku.“MultiChoice has been the key player in the Anglophone African pay-TV market since its launch in 1995. Despite facing competition from StarTimes and Zuku, MultiChoice continues to add new content and innovative services to maintain its appeal,” said Tirvengadum. In French-speaking Africa, France’s Canal Plus Overseas is the dominant player.Total pay-TV revenue was about 4 billion USD in 2015 and is expected to climb to 6 billion USD in 2021, with satellite contributing up to 5 billion USD.Digital migration, competition and cheaper terrestrial pay-TV packages will bring average revenue per user for broadcasters down in most African countries, Dataxis said.Credit: Tech Centrallast_img read more
