Brian HaackGRAMMYs Apr 11, 2018 – 1:36 pm Business has been good for Gary Richards in 2018. Since parting ways with LiveNation – as well as his brainchild production company HARD Events, of which LN owns a controlling share – in Sept. 2017 to take over as President of North American events for LiveStyle, he has acted quickly to establish his new flagship events brand “All My Friends.” First up: a new summer music festival set to take place in downtown Los Angeles.Richards has been expertly teasing the rollout for the AMF brand with a series of activations and smaller events, first teeing up the inaugural voyage of Friend Ship cruise festival – which has already sold out almost a year before the event dates – then hosting a marathon day party during Miami Music Week under the “All My Friends” banner that kicked off at 5 a.m. and ran until midafternoon. The dance festival czar’s latest project will continue to expand his LiveStyle footprint with All My Friends Festival Los Angeles, set to take place in the large outdoor venue ROW LA (which L.A. natives might recognize as the home of the Smorgasburg weekly farmer’s market). The two-day event’s official lineup is still forthcoming, but the press release announcing the new venture promises three stages packed with futurebass, R&B and top tier hip-hop acts. All My Friends Festival Los Angeles will take place Aug. 18 – 19. Early-bird presale tickets will go on-sale on Apr. 12 at 9 a.m. Pacific. India and Myanmar army hold first ever joint drill from Monday. Photo: Defence Ministry of IndiaThe first ever joint military drill of India and Myanmar started at the Joint Training Node in Umroi of Meghalaya on Monday.Fifteen officers from the Myanmar army and 16 from the Indian army are taking part in the five-day drill.India’s defence spokesperson lieutenant colonel Suneet Newton told newsmen that the aim of this joint exercise was to exchange expertise and tactics of the armed forces as well as strengthening the friendship between the two forces.Tactics and use of superior technology to fight militancy will be emphasised in the drill, which will help army officials of both the countries, the spokesperson claimed. The joint exercise has reportedly been organised to train the Myanmar army officials for participation in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations under the UN flag.Indian army organised the joint drill with its Myanmarese counterpart at a time when the latter drew huge global flak for persecuting country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.About 700,000 Rohingyas fled the persecution in the northern Rakhine state, which the United Nations calls a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”, since 25 August this year and took refuge in Bangladesh.
UN logoThe UN Security Council has been given green lights for visits this month to Myanmar and Bangladesh, where it expects to focus on the beleaguered Rohingya Muslim minority, as well as to Iraq.Peru’s UN ambassador Gustavo Meza-Cuadra is the council president for April. He told reporters Monday that details and timing of the separate visits are being worked out.He said council members hope to visit Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, where about 700,000 Rohingyas lived before fleeing to Bangladesh to escape a brutal military counterinsurgency campaign – and thousands still remain.Meza-Cuadra said Iraq needs international support “for rebuilding the country and to ensure reconciliation” following “significant progress” in fighting terrorism, including the Islamic State extremist group. He also noted that Iraqi elections are scheduled in May.
Associated PressIn this April 10, 2017 file photo, Energy Secretary Rick Perry speaks with a woman ahead of a G7 Energy meeting in Rome. Since becoming President Donald Trump’s energy secretary, Perry has kept a low profile and rarely has been seen publicly around Washington. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino, File)Rick Perry twice ran for president and appeared as a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.”But since becoming President Donald Trump’s energy secretary, Perry has kept a low profile and rarely has been seen publicly around Washington. Comedian Hasan Minhaj joked at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that Perry must be “sitting in a room full of plutonium waiting to become Spider-Man. That’s just my hunch.”In truth, Perry has been busy — but far away from the capital. He has toured Energy Department sites around the country, represented the Trump administration at a meeting in Italy and pledged to investigate a tunnel collapse at a radioactive waste storage site in Washington state.Perry has visited a shuttered nuclear waste dump at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain and cautiously began a yearslong process to revive it.On Thursday, Perry embarked on a nine-day trip to Asia, where he planned to check on the progress made since a 2011 nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, Japan, and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to help decontaminate and decommission damaged nuclear reactors. Perry also was to represent the United States at a clean energy meeting in Beijing. The former Texas governor says he’s having the time of his life running an agency he once pledged to eliminate. Perry has emerged as a strong defender of the department’s work, especially the 17 national labs that conduct cutting-edge research on everything from national security to renewable energy.“I’m telling you officially the coolest job I’ve ever had is being secretary of energy … and it’s because of these labs,” the 67-year-old Perry told an audience last month at Idaho National Laboratory, one of several he has visited since taking office in March.“If you work at a national lab … you are making a difference,” Perry said. The energy chief soon will have a chance to back up those words when he and other officials head to Capitol Hill to defend a budget proposal that slashes funding for science, renewables and energy efficiency.Perry probably will be asked to defend Trump’s decision to withdraw from the landmark Paris climate accord. Perry said Thursday that the U.S. remains committed to clean energy and is confident officials can “drive economic growth and protect the environment at the same time.”The administration has called for cutting the Office of Science, which includes 10 national labs, by 17 percent. The proposed budget would reduce spending for renewable and nuclear energy, eliminate the popular Energy Star program to enhance efficiency and gut an agency that promotes research and development of advanced energy technologies.Perry, who served 14 years as Texas governor, likened the spending plan to an opening offer that he expects to see significantly changed in Congress.“I will remind you this is not my first rodeo when it comes to budgeting,” he said during a recent tour of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.“Hopefully we will be able to make that argument to our friends in Congress that what DOE is involved with plays a vital role, not only in the security of America but the economic well-being of the country as we go forward,” he said.Energy lobbyist Frank Maisano said Perry’s actions show instincts honed in his tenure as Texas’s longest-serving governor.“He’s trying to find out what he needs to find out — hearing about these issues from the front lines,” Maisano said. While Perry will never match the scientific expertise of his most recent predecessors at the Energy Department, nuclear physicists Steven Chu and Ernest Moniz, his political skills may offset that knowledge gap, Maisano said.During his Oak Ridge visit, Perry pledged to be “a strong advocate” for Oak Ridge and other labs. He has spoken out in favor of renewable energy such as wind and solar power, noting that while he was governor, Texas maintained its traditional role as a top driller for oil and natural gas, and emerged as the leading producer of wind power in the United States and a top 10 provider of solar power.Abigail Hopper, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, said she had “a very positive conversation” with Perry at a meeting in April.“He was very interested in our technology and how it can be utilized,” she said in an interview.Perry also “knew exactly where Texas was in solar installation,” Hopper said — No. 9 in the nation, compared with its top ranking among wind-producing states.Hopper, a former Interior Department official under President Barack Obama, said she and Perry did not discuss her federal service — but did talk about how national labs can boost the solar industry.“It was good to make that connection between the research and how it translates into the marketplace,” she said. “He gets it.” Share
Viewing child porn not a risk factor for future sex offenses: study More information: Milton Diamond, “Porn: Good for us?”, The Scientist. Available online. (PhysOrg.com) — The arguments against pornography are many, ranging from insistence that porn degrades women and is morally reprehensible to the assertion that pornography viewing is the cause of sex crimes. However, over the years, there have been numerous studies done on this subject. And, reports The Scientist, it appears that there are links between sex crimes and pornography. Just not the sort of links many of us might have expected. Instead of causing sex crimes, porn might actually contribute to reducing their incidence. Explore further Here is what The Scientist reports on the matter:Over the years, many scientists have investigated the link between pornography (considered legal under the First Amendment in the United States unless judged “obscene”) and sex crimes and attitudes towards women. And in every region investigated, researchers have found that as pornography has increased in availability, sex crimes have either decreased or not increased. While that is far from a ringing endorsement, it does at least seem to indicate that pornography isn’t contributing to sex crimes. While some naysayers may point out that most offenders in prison have been exposed to porn, the fact of the matter is that nearly every male — and a good number of females — is exposed to pornography at some point. It stands to reason that most offenders have viewed porn. But other studies found that being punished for porn use might contribute to someone becoming a rapist, and not the porn use itself. Indeed, continues The Scientist, a repressive religious upbringing might be more of a factor in rape than porn:Looking closer, Michael Goldstein and Harold Kant found that rapists were more likely than nonrapists in the prison population to have been punished for looking at pornography while a youngster, while other research has shown that incarcerated nonrapists had seen more pornography, and seen it at an earlier age, than rapists. What does correlate highly with sex offense is a strict, repressive religious upbringing. Richard Green too has reported that both rapists and child molesters use less pornography than a control group of “normal” males. This sort of assertion is bound to raise a few eyebrows and even cause a little controversy. Especially when taken alongside studies that seem to indicate that porn doesn’t result in feelings of misogyny. Additionally, while there is anecdotal evidence that porn users are abusive toward their female partners, there is no evidence that pornography use is the cause of these actions. Perhaps there are other factors, such as alcoholism or violent tendencies, that are bigger influences. In any case, while such studies do not prove that porn is actively good for society, they do seem to imply that pornography isn’t actively bad for us.
