A Garda Inspector has made an impassioned plea for safer driving in County Donegal this Christmas after a court case today in which a young driver without insurance faced a number of charges.Inspector David Murphy told Letterkenny District Court that he wanted the public to take “no chances” this year and urged the public to use taxis when out and about over the festive season.Before the court was Michael Goral, from Slieve Drum, Letterkenny. He faced a number of charges following a crash on December 22 last year in the town.Inspector Murphy said 20-year-old Goral was driving his father to and from a Christmas Party. However the accused man did not have insurance and was involved in a crash.The computer degree student at LYIT had passed his test a week earlier but his father had failed to include him in the insurance policy.The court heard that no-one was injured in the smash.Judge Paul Kelly ordered Goral to go on the pro-social drivers programme and adjourned sentencing until FebruaryHis 47-year-old father was fined €200 for failing to have insurance.Inspector Murphy said he wanted a message to go out to the public as a result of this incident.“The Christmas season is upon us and I would urge people to engage the use of taxis when out and about,” said Inspector Murphy.“We want to keep the roads safe for all users this Christmas.”After the case Inspector Murphy told us: “We want people to enjoy a safe and peaceful Christmas and our officers will be out to make sure that people get home safely after a night out.“No-one should even consider taking a ‘chance’ by either drinking and driving or driving without insurance.“People should weigh up the options; do they want to take a life this Christmas on our roads and go to prison for it, or do they want to pay to get a taxi home safely. 8 March 2016South Africa has signed the host country agreement for the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The conference will be held in South Africa from 24 September to 5 October 2016.Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa signed the agreement on 3 March with the secretary-general of CITES John Scanlon on the margins of an international conference on wildlife crime in The Hague, in the Netherlands. South Africa was one of the first signatories to CITES in 1975 and continues to play an active role in the enforcement of the Convention.The minister welcomes the world to South Africa for CITES CoP17:The signing coincided with the release of the official CITES CoP17 logo.The logo is an iconic image of the African white rhinoceros, according to the Department of Environmental Affairs. The rhino’s body comprises the outlines of a number of species of endangered plants and animals from the African continent, such as the pangolin, cycad, African aloe and African lion.The selection of the rhino as the dominant image reinforces South Africa’s status as home to the largest rhino populations in the world, it says. South Africa’s sterling rhino conservation track record has resulted in significant growth in rhino numbers: from approximately 50 in 1895 to approximately 18 000 today.“The choice of a rhino as the dominant image in the logo for CoP17 is also to draw attention to the challenges South Africa and other African range states face as a result of poaching,” said the minister.Frontline challengesScanlon described South Africa as a highly appropriate location for the conference, given the frontline wildlife challenges and opportunities being tackled on the continent.“Africa is home to a vast array of CITES-listed species and South Africa is globally recognised for ‘the Big Five’. CITES Parties and observers look forward to convening in South Africa for the World Wildlife Conference,” said Scanlon.At the conference, parties will collectively evaluate the progress made since 2013, and take decisions on what additional measures are needed to end illicit wildlife trafficking.They will also consider a number of proposals to bring additional species under CITES trade controls, as well as tackle issues concerning livelihoods and the review of significant trade, traceability, and the effectiveness of CITES implementation, among other things.The illicit trade in wildlife and rhino poaching will feature on the agenda of CoP17. Digital—readers, advertising, revenue—is growing, but publishers are managing that growth in different ways depending on where their value propositions lie.For a news-driven operation, that could mean emphasizing speed and developing paid products in niche verticals. It could be offering extensions like e-commerce and education for service-oriented publications.Other elements are universal. Content is consumed differently on mobile devices; data collection makes targeted advertising possible. Publishers from different pockets of the industry discussed where they’re finding value in digital at the DeSilva+Phillips Dealmakers Summit on Thursday. Rob Grimshaw, managing director of the Financial Times website, FT.com, Inbar Barak, SVP of digital programming and strategy at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, John Brown, Chief Digital Officer for Taunton Press, and Troy Young, president of Hearst Magazines Digital, were on the panel moderated by Miriam Gottfried, Heard on the Street columnist at The Wall Street Journal.—On adapting your content for mobile: “People consume content on mobile in fundamentally different ways from how they do on desktops,” Grimshaw says. “It really is a revolution. The device is always with you and you use it habitually—people pick up their mobile device, I think, 150 times a day—and every time you expect a quick, bite-sized update.”They’re not the only ones, but Grimshaw’s team has developed a product, fastFT, specifically for that purpose. It’s staffed 24-hours-a-day, providing a continuously-updated stream of condensed news summaries.Taunton has approached the problem by going responsive, Brown says. Right now the focus is on figuring out new ways to reach the user: “We have this tremendous opportunity to figure out how else to embed this in your life.”On paywalls: “Doing a paywall well is hard, but deciding to do it is an easy decision,” Brown says. “It solves itself from a business-model standpoint.”One of Taunton’s properties, Fine Cooking, just took its paywall down because the epicurean space is crowded right now, he says. Meanwhile, paywalls are thriving for most of the company’s other brands.Paywalls aren’t the solution for Hearst, Young says—the markets they occupy are too competitive. While that takes the paywall solution off the table, it’s forced them to look into other revenue streams like e-commerce.”Paywalls aren’t the solution for every media out there,” Grimshaw says. “But the big thing for publishers is diversifying their businesses.”On e-commerce: It’s been growing rapidly for MSLO, Barak says. Paywalls won’t work for them—”You don’t really want to read about organizing,” she says—but they’re in the solutions business. They give you the information you need to buy and then the option to purchase.On education: Taunton is focusing on real-time interaction with its consumers. They’ve been in the digital learning space for years through video and how-to guides, but now they’re making instructors available on-demand. The project is in beta, Brown says.On developing niche verticals: With digital distribution costing so much less than print, if you can occupy a number of niches, you can build a business with scale, Grimshaw says. Marketing those verticals is easier when you’re building them off of an already-established core though. But the nugget I’m about to eat from San Francisco-based Just was grown in a lab, using cells taken from a living chicken. It’s cultured meat (and cruelty-free).Carnivores, breathe a sigh of relief. Tags Unlike entirely plant-based products such as the Impossible Burger, the Just chicken nugget is actual meat.Cultured meat, also called lab-grown or clean meat, starts with the collection of cells, usually done through a biopsy so the animals aren’t harmed. Just says it has also been able to get cells from a chicken feather. The most viable cells are chosen and then given the right nutrients they need to grow in a bioreactor. In the case of this chicken nugget, those nutrients are plant-based.Not only does cultured meat avoid sacrificing animals, it could take fewer resources to produce than traditional livestock. Around 14.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are from livestock, according to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. But one study questions how environmentally friendly clean meat products could be if the process is energy-intensive.The chicken nugget once plated with Just’s plant-based mayo as a dipping sauce. CNET Just’s cultured chicken product takes around two weeks to grow in a bioreactor.
