SP suspects ‘internal sabotage’ played a key role in poll debacle

first_imgThe Samajwadi Party suspects that ‘internal sabotage’ may have played a part in its poor performance in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Though the party did not categorically name any leader, it has given subtle hints that Shivpal Yadav, the estranged uncle of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, is the suspect. The two were part of a bitter family feud in the months leading to and during the polls. As part of its performance review exercise, the party has claimed that some of its leaders and workers gave tacit support to the BJP. The party is trying to identity such people and has promised to act sternly against them.On Monday, SP president Akhilesh Yadav held a review meeting with top leaders and candidates from the Yadav stronghold areas — Farukhabad, Etawah, Auraiya, Mainpuri, Firozabad, Kannauj, Etah and Kasganj. The SP suffered huge losses in its stronghold this time. Mr. Shivpal Yadav has so far stayed away from the party meetings called by Mr. Akhilesh. “It has come to light that some people acted against the declared SP candidate, directly or indirectly, and gave support to the BJP,” SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.Days after the election results were declared last month, the SP started a drive to identify those who damaged the party from within. SP State president Naresh Uttam Patel assigned party general secretaries, and district and city presidents the task of identifying the “leaders, office-bearers and workers” who worked against the SP’s candidates. In a letter to party office-bearers, Mr. Patel said the SP state office and Akhilesh Yadav himself received information that leaders and workers were working against the party in “some areas.”Mr. Patel had given the SP city and district presidents and general secretaries till March 31 to submit a list of people who worked against the party. They were asked to do it in a sealed envelope to maintain secrecy.“They need to be identified and action taken against them so that the party organisation does not become weak,” Mr. Patel wrote in his letter. The SP has convened a meeting of its district and city presidents, and state executive office-bearers on April 6. Mr. Akhilesh Yadav will address it. Bid to strengthen partyThe party is also working to stitch together a programme to “strengthen” and “activate” the party organisation, youth organisation and other frontal organisations, district and city units, said Mr. Chaudhary.last_img read more

Amit Shah backs Kodnani’s alibi

first_imgBJP president Amit Shah on Monday testified before a special SIT court that he had seen Dr. Maya Kodnani in the Gujarat Assembly and subsequently at the civil hospital in Sola on February 28, supporting the latter’s contention that she was not present when the Naroda Gaam massacre took place. She is a key accused in the case that relates to the brutal killing of 11 people belonging to the minority community during the 2002 communal riots in the State.Appearing as a defence witness, Mr. Shah told the court that he had “seen Mayaben Kodnani inside the Assembly at 8.30 a.m. and again at the Sola civil hospital around 11-11.15 a.m. and then they were both escorted out by the police.”The bodies of 59 people killed in the Godhra train carnage were brought to the civil hospital in Sola in Ahmedabad. The Sola hospital was part of Mr. Shah’s Assembly constituency Sarkhej in Ahmedabad. In his hour-long deposition, Mr. Shah answered several questions posed to him in the SIT court of P.B. Desai, who is conducting the trial in the Naroda Gaam massacre case.Asked where Dr. Kodnani went from the Assembly, Mr. Shah said he was not aware of the details. He also did not know where Dr. Kodnani went after they left the hospital. He told the court that the Special Investigation Team probing the case had not contacted him for any information regarding Dr. Kodnani’s whereabouts at the time of the massacre. However, several prosecution witnesses submitted that she was leading a mob that carried out the massacre between 9.30 and 10 a.m. in Naroda Gaam, an area falling under her Assembly constituency. In her submission, she named 14 persons including Mr. Shah as defence witnesses and said that she was not present at the place of killings as was being claimed by the prosecution. All the persons she listed as witnesses have testified in her favour before the court.Earlier on September 12, the trial court had asked Mr. Shah to appear before the court on September 18 as defence witness. The court had issued summons after Dr. Kodnani’s lawyer submitted Mr. Shah’s Ahmedabad residence address. Before that, Dr. Kodnani had claimed that she had failed to reach Mr. Shah because he was constantly travelling outside Gujarat.last_img read more

first_imgThe annual pace of inflation slowed in October as increases in the price of gasoline were smaller than in September, Statistics Canada reported Friday. Its consumer price index was up 1.4 per cent in October compared with a year ago, following a 1.6 per cent increase in September. Excluding gasoline, the index was up 1.3 per cent compared with a year ago – more than the 1.1-per-cent increase in September.Prices were up in seven of the eight major categories compared with a year ago with the transportation and shelter categories contributing the most.Transportation prices last month were up 3.0 per cent compared with a year ago following a 3.8 per cent increase in September as gasoline prices were up 6.5 per cent year over year in October compared with 14.1 per cent in September in the aftermath of hurricane Harvey. Pak Hindu minor girls approach court seek protection suspect who facilitated wedding

first_imgLahore: A man has been arrested in Pakistan for allegedly assisting in solemnising the wedding of two Hindu minor girls, who were reportedly abducted and forcefully converted to Islam, as the teenagers approached a court in the country’s Punjab province seeking protection. The two girls, Raveena (13) and Reena (15), were allegedly kidnapped by a group of “influential” men from their home in Ghotki district in Sindh on the eve of Holi. Soon after the kidnapping, a video went viral in which a cleric was purportedly shown soleminising the Nikah (marriage) of the two girls, triggering a nationwide outrage. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered a probe into the issue. According to Geo TV, the teenagers approached a court in Bahawalpur in Pakistan’s Punjab province seeking protection. “Police have arrested a man from Khanpur who is suspected to have assisted in the nikah (marital contract) of the girls,” it said. However, it is not confirmed whether the arrested man is the cleric who performed their marriage. Earlier, there were reports that the cleric who performed the minor girls’ marriage was arrested from Khanpur in Sindh. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a prominent Hindu lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, said he would present a resolution in the National Assembly in its next session demanding an end to forced conversions. The draft resolution demands that the most unfortunate incidents of kidnappings and forced conversions must be condemned unanimously by all honourable members of Parliament. “The bill against forced conversions which was unanimously passed by Sindh Assembly in 2016 and then reverted due to pressure of extremist elements, must be resurrected and passed in the Assembly on priority basis, ” says the draft resolution. The resolution would seek strict action against controversial religious elements for supporting such inhuman practice. A war of words broke out between India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry over the reported abduction, forced conversion and underage marriages of the two Hindu teenagers. The spat started soon after Swaraj sought details from the Indian envoy in Pakistan into the reported abduction of two Hindu teenaged girls. Swaraj, while tagging a media report about the incident, tweeted that she has asked the Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan to send a report on the matter. Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry responded to her tweet, saying it was his country’s “internal issue”. In a Twitter post in Urdu on Sunday, Chaudhry said the prime minister has asked the Sindh chief minister to look into reports that the girls in question have been taken to Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab. He said the prime minister has also ordered the Sindh and Punjab governments to devise a joint action plan in light of the incident, and to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents from happening again. The Hindu community in Pakistan has carried out massive demonstrations calling for strict action to be taken against those responsible, while reminding Prime Minister Khan of his promises to the minorities of the country. Last year, Khan during his election campaign had said his party’s agenda was to uplift the various religious groups across Pakistan and said they would take effective measures to prevent forced marriages of Hindu girls. Rights activist Jibran Nasir tweeted that the sisters were converted at the Dargah Barchundi Sharif and were taken to Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab following their marriages. Hindus form the biggest minority community in Pakistan. According to official estimates, 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan. Majority of Pakistan’s Hindu population is settled in Sindh province. According to media reports, approximately 25 forced marriages take place every month only in Umerkot district in Sindh province.last_img read more

Article 35A hampering dev in JK Jaitley

first_imgNew Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday said Article 35A, which restricts non-permanent residents to buy property in Jammu and Kashmir, is “constitutionally vulnerable” and also hampering economic development of the state. The statement comes amidst the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pressing for early elections to the state assembly in the state. The state is under President’s rule and the Union Cabinet takes all policy decisions related to the militancy-hit state. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’In a blog, Jaitley said the seven-decade history of the state of Jammu and Kashmir confronts changing India with several questions. “Was the Nehruvian course, which the state had embarked, a historical blunder or was it the correct course to follow? Most Indians today believe that it is the former. “Does our policy today have to be guided by that erroneous vision or an out of box thinking which is in consonance with ground reality?” Jaitley questioned. The senior BJP leader and in-charge of the party’s campaign committee for general elections said Article 35A was “surreptitiously” included by a presidential notification in the Constitution in 1954. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&KArtcle 35A, he said, was neither a part of the original Constitution framed by the Constituent Assembly, nor did it come as a Constitutional Amendment under Article 368 of the Constitution which requires an approval by two-third majority of both Houses of Parliament. “It came as a presidential notification and is a surreptitious executive insertion in the Constitution.” Jaitley further said the Article gives the right to the state government to discriminate between two state citizens living in the state on the basis of declaring some as permanent residents while leaving out the others. It also discriminates between permanent residents of the state and all other Indian citizens living elsewhere, he added. “Lakhs of Indian citizens in J&K vote in Lok Sabha elections but not in Assembly, municipal or Panchayat polls. Their children cannot get government jobs. They cannot own property and their children cannot get admitted to governmental institutions. “The same applies to those who live elsewhere in the country. The heirs of ladies marrying outside the state are disinherited from owing or inheriting property,” the minister added. He said the state does not have adequate financial resources and its ability to raise more has been crippled by Article 35A.last_img read more

AAPs boastful claims on education health nothing but propaganda Gupta

first_imgNew Delhi: The most important human development indicators health and education took a back seat under the AAP government’s four-year rule in Delhi despite “boastful” claims by the ruling dispensation, senior Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta alleged on Wednesday.Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, whose party is running a campaign for full statehood of Delhi, should tell the people why it “failed” to work in these areas despite winning the 2015 Assembly elections with a massive majority, Gupta said in a press conference. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murder”During more than four years of AAP rule, Delhi has suffered a lot in the most important human development sectors of education and health. The government claims to have built thousands of classrooms without any survey of potential students at a cost of Rs 20 lakh per classroom. It spent Rs 1,400 crore on constructing 8,000 classrooms, he said. “New classrooms are no substitute for new schools. The primary responsibility of the government under the Right to Education is to make education available in hitherto areas uncovered by the reach of education. Children in many areas are still denied education near their homes,” Gupta claimed. He claimed further that as per a recent affidavit filed in the Delhi High Court by the government, majority of students who failed in Classes IX, X, XI and XII, were denied re-admission.last_img read more

Ohio State defense stiffens in second half of 4228 win

Redshirt-freshman linebacker Darron Lee (43) runs a recovered fumble toward the end zone during a game against Michigan on Nov. 29 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 42-28. Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorFor nearly three quarters of play, Ohio State football fans across the country must have thought it was deja vu.Just like the previous year, OSU was heavily-favored going into its game against archrival Michigan. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, however, the Wolverines were once again matching them step for step. With 7:41 left in the third quarter, Michigan tied the game at 21 following a 12-play, 75-yard drive. The Wolverines had already scored on drives of 80 and 95 yards in the first half, leaving a record Ohio Stadium crowd virtually quiet.Enter Michael Bennett. The senior defensive lineman and co-captain gave a speech to the entire Buckeye defense after the score, he said, and the unit then forced the Wolverines into two straight punts and a fumble, allowing the offense to take the lead back in what would become a 42-28 OSU victory.OSU allowed just 129 yards in the game following the speech, and after the game redshirt-freshman Darron Lee credited Bennett with the improved caliber of play.“Second half, yeah — credit that to Mike Bennett for getting into us in the third quarter. He’s a vocal leader, a vocal force when we’re not doing our job,” Lee said. “He’s a great captain for that. We all needed that for our defense and it showed.”Bennett took similar action during halftime of OSU’s game against Minnesota on Nov. 15. At that point the Buckeyes only led by three, and this time around Bennett said the message was simple.“When you gotta say something, you gotta say something. I felt like that was the best time. I think they had just scored, and it didn’t feel right, they way they were scoring,” he said after The Game. “We expected them to do a bunch of screens and draws and all this stuff, but they just straight up ran the ball down our field and scored, and that’s not all right.”The Centerville, Ohio, native finished with three solo tackles and one sack, as did his linemate, junior Adolphus Washington. Washington noted after the game that Bennett’s interventions in the games against Minnesota, and now Michigan, have been important to the defense’s play.“Guys definitely respond better to peers than they do to a coach, so Mike’s been showing a lot of leadership these past couple weeks,” he said. “And I think that’s been helping us a lot in this second half.”But before addressing his teammates, Bennett and Buckeyes were just hanging on against Michigan’s redshirt-senior quarterback Devin Gardner. In the meeting between the two team’s last season, Gardner threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns. This year he had 129 yards in the first half, and helped the Wolverines convert on four of six third-down attempts in the opening 30 minutes.Washington credited the competitive nature of the rivalry as the reason why the Wolverines —  who ranked last in scoring offense in the Big Ten entering Saturday’s game — put together long drives and 21 points through three-and-a-half quarters.“They always got a game plan for us, they always have something up their sleeve for us. Like you said, they were coming right at us and was we were making mistakes on little things and they were just capitalizing on it,” he said. “But once we went in there the second half and we talked about it, we got it covered.”Despite the defense finding its collective footing and the offense doing similar, perhaps the biggest play of the game came on the first play of the fourth quarter. With OSU driving, redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett was tackled after a short game. But he didn’t get back up. The potential Heisman Trophy candidate had to be carted off the field, and an OSU official said after the game that Barrett suffered a fractured right ankle on the play, meaning his season is over.Lee said he approached Barrett after the play to reassure him that the team had the game under control.“I went out there and told him, ‘hey man, we got you.’ Told him I love him because I do, he’s a great guy and he’s a great brother,” Lee said. “Everybody was just gonna pick it up from there on, and that’s all it was.”After the teams traded three drives in which they punted, the Buckeyes extended the lead to 14 when sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott ran in from 44 yards. On Michigan’s next drive came the real game-clincher: sophomore defensive lineman Joey Bosa stripped Gardner, before Lee picked up the ball and took it another 33 yards into the end zone.It was a similar play to the first game of the season against Navy when Lee — in his OSU debut — gathered a fumble and ran for a score. The linebacker said his play against the Wolverines hadn’t quite hit him yet.“It’s really different from the video games, I’ll tell you that. It’s nice, a lot louder,” he said. “Hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it feels good that we won.”Even in victory, eyes turn to OSU’s quarterback situation as redshirt-sophomore Cardale Jones takes the reigns for a Dec. 6 matchup in the Big Ten Championship and a potential bowl game. Junior linebacker Joshua Perry, who leads the Buckeyes in total tackles with 108, said the change means the defensive side of the ball has to be even better than before.“We’ve got some things to shore up, definitely,” he said. “We can’t have six and seven-yard runs on first down. But you get past the emotions of the game and you really turn on the film and see what you need to work on, and we’ll find out.”Lee had similar feelings when it comes to what the defense must do to help the team win going forward.“Personally, I feel like defense is going to have to step up tremendously now,” he said. “I’m gonna do everything I can, and if that means I gotta do a little extra, then so be it.”OSU is scheduled to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship on Dec. 6 in Indianapolis. read more

Luis Suarez celebrates 150 La Liga matches for Barcelona

first_imgAfter reaching an impressive 150 La Liga matches for FC Barcelona, striker Luis Suarez explained the sacrifice he had to make when he arrived. As one of FC Barcelona’s greatest strikers to play in the modern era, Luis Suarez completed his 150th La Liga match against Girona last Sunday and he shared the moment in which he decided to sacrifice his game in order to fit in a squad that had Lionel Messi and Neymar. The Uruguay international was coming from a Liverpool squad in which he was the most important offensive player, he moved all around the pitch at will and didn’t have any restrictions to play in a specific position. When he first got to Barcelona however, the manager told him that he would be the player who was going to have to do the “dirty work” with all the defenders inside the box. This was something that Luis Suarez was very familiar with due to his learning experience for Uruguay under manager Oscar Washington Tabarez, when he realized that his defensive work was going to be on point, Luis didn’t care about making a sacrifice for his teammates because he was used to it already. The effort paid off in a major way, as he won the treble with his two offensive teammates on his first season with the club.Proud to have worn the FC Barcelona shirt 150 times in La Liga. Hear me discuss how I felt when I first joined, only on @OTRO. #OurOtherClub pic.twitter.com/7wbQhHDCW8— Luis Suarez (@LuisSuarez9) January 28, 2019But the Luis Suarez story didn’t stop there, as he went on to have an outstanding La Liga performance next season with the Catalan club after scoring an impressive 40 goals that gave him the chance to win the second Golden Shoe of his career. This individual award is only given to the player who scores the highest number of league goals throughout the season, but all those goals wouldn’t have been possible to score by Luis Suarez if it wasn’t for that indomitable fighting spirit that is very usual in players who were born in Uruguay.Luis Suarez shared his learning process in a new project called “OTHER”, where he also shared a hashtag by the name of #OurOtherClub.“When I first came to Barcelona I was playing with Neymar on one side and Messi on the other…” said Suarez on an interview for Otro.“I used to ask my self where was I going to play. Well, all I had to do was my job. I had to run, I had to fight the ball against defenders, I had to search for spaces so that two of the best players in the world could also play freely.”“In that sense, I knew that I needed to adapt and be smart.”Jose Mourinho, Lionel MessiMourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.3 puntos y seguimos 💪💪💪VISÇA BARÇA 🔴🔵 Grande equipo 👏👏👏3 points and we keep going 💪💪💪 Great team pic.twitter.com/BUOiiEJQ2A— Luis Suarez (@LuisSuarez9) January 27, 2019Despite having all these obstacles on his career, Luis Suarez was always able to perform at the top of his game for any club he represented and FC Barcelona was no exception.Last Sunday’s match represented Suarez’s 150th La Liga match since he arrived in Barcelona, he’s become the player with the most goals after said number of matches in the club’s history even above Lionel Messi. The Argentine didn’t reach 150 league matches until that mythical 2011-2012 season when he scored the all-time record of 50 goals in a single tournament, Messi reached those 150 matches and he scored fewer goals than Suarez until that moment. The Uruguay international has a better goal-average than Barcelona’s greatest player in history and he still hasn’t reached the end of his career with the Catalan club, this relationship between both players might be the greatest duo in football history. So far this season, Luis has already scored 15 goals, and Messi has reached 19 in the current competition. Both of them seem like they will have a groundbreaking tournament, which may most likely end with both of them winning La Liga title.🎂 ¿Todavía no has felicitado a @LuisSuarez9?🎁 Envía tu mensaje de felicitación pic.twitter.com/2VxuIVH1Tl— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona_es) January 24, 2019How many goals will Luis Suarez score this season for FC Barcelona?
