Box Score AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones came out on top in a high-scoring game with the Drake University softball team on Wednesday at Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State (19-26) defeated Drake (24-22) by a score of 15-12 as the teams split the season series. Alexander and Wright led Drake with three hits each. Sophomore Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) drove in three runs as junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) and freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) each drove in two runs. Pena and Wright each scored two runs. The Bulldogs will host UNI Wednesday night at 6 p.m.Print Friendly Version The Bulldogs trailed 15-9 going into their final at-bat, but sophomore Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) blasted a pinch-hit, three-run home run to pull within three runs at 15-12. It was the first career home run for Newman. Sophomore Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) followed with a double, but was stranded as fellow sophomore Kelsey Wright’s (Olathe, Kan.) deep shot to the centerfield warning track was caught to end the game. Drake took the lead back once again the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Pena hit a slow roller to the ISU pitcher, who couldn’t field the ball as Wright raced home to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead. However, Drake couldn’t capitalize for more runs with the bases loaded as the next two batters were retired. Iowa State tied the game in its next at bat, but Drake limited the damage to just the one run after relief pitcher Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) worked out of bases loaded with zero outs situation by recording three-straight outs. McKinnon took the loss in the circle as her record dropped to 5-9. McKinnon pitched four innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits. Smith started the game and later reentered. She pitched two total innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Drake jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wright and Frank each hit singles and Sowa followed with a double that plated the pair. Freshman Gabbie Jonas (Omaha, Neb.) later drove in Sowa with an RBI single for the third run. Unfortunately, Iowa State came right back in the bottom of the frame to score six runs to take the lead at 6-3 after one inning of play. The Cyclones’ lead didn’t last long as the Bulldogs came back in the top of the second. Drake scored one run on a bases loaded walk by Pena and the next batter, Smith, cleared the bases with a double to take a 7-6 lead.last_img
