COVID-19: Govt to convert more towers in athletes village for makeshift hospital

first_imgThe Public Works and Housing Ministry is set to convert three more apartment towers in the athletes village in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta into makeshift hospital buildings for COVID-19 patients to accommodate a surge in confirmed cases in the capital city.“The ministry will prepare and renovate three additional towers – towers 2, 4 and 5 – in the Kemayoran athletes village as an emergency COVID-19 hospital,” said Khalawi Abdul Hamid, the ministry’s housing provision director general, in a statement on Wednesday.Khalawi said the second phase of the makeshift hospital construction was expected to increase bed capacity and provide better accommodation for staff members – including doctors and nurses – who worked around the clock to provide treatment for COVID-19 patients. Tower 2, which consists of 886 apartments, will be used to house a maximum of 2,458 health workers.Meanwhile, towers 4 and 5 will house treatment wards for COVID-19 patients. Similarly, each tower can accommodate up to 2,458 patients in 886 apartments, Khawali added. The first stage of the construction was completed last month, with four apartment towers – towers 1, 3, 6, and 7 – being converted into makeshift hospital buildings for COVID-19 patients.President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo previously said the makeshift hospital would be ready to handle about 3,000 patients at a time. The 10-tower athletes village was built for the 2018 Asian Games, which Jakarta co-hosted with Palembang, South Sumatra.Khawali said the ministry also planned to convert existing treatment wards on several floors in tower 6 into intensive care units and emergency wards while the rest of the tower would be used as isolation wards for COVID-19 patients.“We expect the construction to be completed next Saturday, April 18,” he said.Jakarta is considered the epicenter of the outbreak in Indonesia, having recorded the highest number of confirmed cases and deaths among other 31 provinces across the archipelago. As of Wednesday afternoon, Jakarta had recorded at least 1,470 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 114 deaths caused by the disease.Topics :last_img read more

Stem Cells Protect Against Defective Copies

first_imgThe Pasteur Institute (see Louis Pasteur) has found evidence supporting a controversial theory known as the “immortal DNA” theory.  According to News-Medical.Net, researchers at the institute believe that stem cells keep the best copies and allow only defective ones to differentiate and specialize.  If so, this may be another mechanism for minimizing the effects of mutations.  The lead scientist said, this is an exciting finding, as it seems to defy one of the basic rules of cell biology and genetics: that genetic material is distributed randomly.  It appears that the cellular machinery distinguishes old from new when it comes to DNA, and it may use this distinction to protect the body from mutations and cancer.  It is also possible that this mechanism is used to silence gene expression in the stem cell.According to the press release, the research was published in Nature Cell Biology.Oh no, this is bad news for us Darwinians.  We need those mutations to advance the tree of life.  If the ID people get hold of this, it will give them another hammer to beat us with.  Let’s pre-empt it with a good just-so story.  Can somebody come up with one?  Anyone?(Visited 5 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

IPL 7, KXIP vs KKR: Punjab vs Kolkata, Final- As it happened!

first_imgKolkata won the toss and elected to field against PunjabWelcome to the coverage of the Indian Premier League 2014, Final between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders from the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.Full IPL Coverage | Scorecard | Match Photos Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Kings XI Punjab by three wickets with three balls to spare at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. Piyush Chawla is running all around the Chinnaswamy like he was a certain Usain Bolt! He has his bat in the air, raises his arms in triumph. SRK has the same pose too, but in a standing position. Can someone catch Chawla? No they can’t. So they wrestle him down to the ground. Everyone are falling on him. What a moment this is! Low full toss outside off and it’s carved away over point. Sweeper was nowhere to be seen and the ball slowly trickles away to the fence. As soon as the ball crossed the ropes, Chawla set off, running a victory lap. The Kolkata team tried to stop him, but looking at his run no-one could. What a chase and what a final to finish off the tournament. Kolkata richly deserved champions and for the 2nd time. Punjab are a devastated team, if that is right way to describe them. Lots of fireworks as Chinnaswamy Stadium sees all kinds of celebrations. Preity Zinta isn’t in tears, she manages to compose herself, though she looks very disappointed. A special innings from Manish Pandey, someone needed to produce an innings to topple Saha and it was upto the local boy – Pandey, who has been brought up on this wicket to provide it. Uthappa failed tonight, and that placed additional pressure on Pandey. But he showcased his skills at the right time and came good on the big stage. He took on each bowler and some of his big hits were a treat. advertisementPunjab picked wickets at regular intervals, but there were too many boundary balls given away. The asking rate wasn’t allowed to get to the opposition which is a credit to Kolkata as well. Karanveer Singh picked 4 wickets, showing what a nerveless performer he is, despite going for runs. Finally it was left to Chawla – who was a Punjab player for the first six seasons to deliver the knockout blow to his former side. Amidst all this, one shouldn’t forget that it was the 9th win in a row for Kolkata which keeps their winning streak alive going into next season.Kolkata are 2014 Indian Premier League champions!! 19.3 overs: FOUR!! TEAM NEWS: Punjab have David Miller, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson as the overseas players in their Playing XI. On the other hand, Kolkata will play Ryan ten Doeschate, Shakib Al Hasan, Morne Morkel and Sunil Narine as the overseas players in their Playing XI today.TOSS: Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field against Kings XI Punjab. What’s At Stake:It’s rematch of the first qualifier with Kings XI Punjab looking to avenge their defeat at the hands of their rivals Kolkata today. On one hand where Kolkata will looking to become only the second team – after Chennai Super Kings – in history to cinch the IPL title on two occasions, their counterparts Punjab will have their best chance to secure their maiden title this season. Both Kolkata and Punjab will be eager to secure their IPL 7 finals berth with a clinical win today. However, the losing team will have another shot to make the finals cut in the Eliminator match against the winner of Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.Road To Finals:Punjab: Preity Zinta’s ‘Red Devils’ have been one of the most entertaining teams in the IPL this season. George Bailey and his men clinched the top spot in the points table with a sensational 11 wins and a mere three losses out of 14 games they played. Despite losing the first qualifier to Kolkata by 28 runs, Punjab came back strong against IPL’s most successful team – Chennai Super Kings – to win the eliminator by 24 runs.Kolkata: Shah Rukh Khan’s Knight Riders witnessed some highs and lows during their journey in the IPL this season. Gautam Gambhir and his men secured the second spot in the points tally with nine wins and five losses out of 14 games they played. But, their most convincing win in this season came when it mattered the most, against a rival that was clearly touted as favourites. But, an all-round performance and a bit of luck helped Kolkata trample Punjab by 28 runs.Top Run Scorers(from):Punjab: With 552 runs, Maxwell sits pretty at the 3rd position in the runs chart while Sehwag has jumped to the 6th spot with 448 runs. Miller is not far back, at 7th place with 445 runs – meaning Punjab boast of three batsmen in the top-10.Kolkata: Robin Uthappa is in the form of his life with 655 runs, he is well placed to finish the tournament as the leading run scorer. The next best for Kolkata is Gautam Gambhir – with 309 runs he lies at a distant 22nd position.Top Wicket Takers(from):Punjab: Despite featuring in only 11 matches, Sandeep Sharma has earned a place in the top-10. He is 5th with 18 wickets while Akshar Patel, the find of the season for Punjab, lies just one spot below with 17 wickets.Kolkata: At 3rd position, Sunil Narine has been arguably the best Kolkata bowler on show. He has not just snaffled 20 wickets, but his overs have cost him a miserly 6.01 runs per over. There was some doubt if he could make it to the final but having decided against playing for the West Indies in the Test series against New Zealand, he will be very much there to lead Kolkata’s charge once again. Piyush Chawla is the next best bowler with 12 wickets, but he is at 17th spot. The figures only go on to show that Kolkata have not relied on a single individual but have performed as a team in their march towards the final.Head-to-Head Record:Overall: Kolkata and Punjab have faced each other 14 times in the IPL history wherein Kolkata have emerged victorious on 8 occasions while Punjab has won 6 times.2014 Season: Punjab trounced Kolkata in their first meeting at Abu Dhabi, but Kolkata came back strongly to beat Punjab twice during their 8-match winning streak this season.Kings XI Punjab:Perhaps the team to beat this year, Punjab are into their first final of the IPL. Already boasting of a devastating batting line-up, George Bailey’s men look to have all the ingredients required to annex the trophy. The batting has been powerful, the bowling more than decent and has been backed up by some electric fielding – all factors contributing to their success so far.Kolkata Knight Riders:If Punjab are bristling with talent, complete team effort has been the reason for the surge in Kolkata’s ranks. Looking down and out at one stage of the tournament, Kolkata bounced back in spectacular fashion, reeling off seven wins in a row to make it to the playoffs.Supported vociferously by the partisan home-crowd, they romped home against their final opponents in fine style to book an automatic slot in the summit clash. While the batting has been solid, largely led by Robin Uthappa, the bowlers have gelled well as an unit.Key player to watch in today’s crucial tie:Glenn Maxwell: The million-dollar man last season, Maxwell was snatched by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping Rs 6 crore this year. The 25-year-old is a terrific all-rounder to have in your side. He can bowl right-arm off-spin and bat anywhere in the middle-order. He shot to fame after smashing a 19-ball half-century in 2009-10 – the fastest fifty in Australia’s domestic cricket. His most recent antics of 33-ball 74, the third fastest fifty in T20 internationals, shows his batting prowess. He will have to play a key role if Punjab intend to clinch their first IPL title this year.Sunil Narine: The mystery spinner from West Indies, Sunil Narine, was been one of the most influential players for the KKR during their victorious IPL campaign in 2012. Narine was also the highest wicket-taker for KKR with 22 wickets in 16 matches last season. His exemplary performances also helped him in bagging the Player of the Tournament award in 2012. His ability to bowl tidy overs in pressure situations gives an edge to KKR’s bowling department.David Miller: The 24-year-old South African, aka ‘Killer Miller’ in IPL, is as explosive as they come in limited-overs cricket. After making a name for his power-hitting, Miller has turned into a gruesome strokeplayer in modern-day cricket. His ability to play a wide range of strokes, both off the front and backfoot has earned him quite a reputation in international cricket. Miller was also one of the most entertaining batsmen in the IPL last season. The young South African took the IPL by storm after scoring 418 runs with 28 fours and 24 sixes for Kings XI Punjab in 2013. The performance impressed his team owners to such an extent that he became one of the only two players to be retained by KXIP ahead of 2014 IPL auctions.Gautam Gambhir: Indian opening batsman, Gautam Gambhir, was one of the most consistent performers for KKR last season. The skipper, while leading from the front, helped Kolkata to it’s first-ever IPL title victory in 2012. The left-hander was also the highest run-scorer with 406 runs in 16 matches last season. Apart from being a devastating batsman, Gambhir is an active and responsible skipper on field.Robin Uthappa: The 27-year-old explosive batsman was the top run-scorer for now-defunct Sahara Pune Warriors with 405 runs in 16 matches in 2012. He is an outstanding fielder, a reliable wicketkeeper and can even bowl slow medium pace. Following the termination of Pune Warriors in 2013, Uthappa was bought for a whopping Rs 5 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL auctions this year. Pak Hindu minor girls approach court seek protection suspect who facilitated wedding

first_imgLahore: A man has been arrested in Pakistan for allegedly assisting in solemnising the wedding of two Hindu minor girls, who were reportedly abducted and forcefully converted to Islam, as the teenagers approached a court in the country’s Punjab province seeking protection. The two girls, Raveena (13) and Reena (15), were allegedly kidnapped by a group of “influential” men from their home in Ghotki district in Sindh on the eve of Holi. Soon after the kidnapping, a video went viral in which a cleric was purportedly shown soleminising the Nikah (marriage) of the two girls, triggering a nationwide outrage. According to Geo TV, the teenagers approached a court in Bahawalpur in Pakistan’s Punjab province seeking protection. “Police have arrested a man from Khanpur who is suspected to have assisted in the nikah (marital contract) of the girls,” it said. However, it is not confirmed whether the arrested man is the cleric who performed their marriage. Earlier, there were reports that the cleric who performed the minor girls’ marriage was arrested from Khanpur in Sindh. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a prominent Hindu lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, said he would present a resolution in the National Assembly in its next session demanding an end to forced conversions. The draft resolution demands that the most unfortunate incidents of kidnappings and forced conversions must be condemned unanimously by all honourable members of Parliament. “The bill against forced conversions which was unanimously passed by Sindh Assembly in 2016 and then reverted due to pressure of extremist elements, must be resurrected and passed in the Assembly on priority basis, ” says the draft resolution. The resolution would seek strict action against controversial religious elements for supporting such inhuman practice. A war of words broke out between India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry over the reported abduction, forced conversion and underage marriages of the two Hindu teenagers. The spat started soon after Swaraj sought details from the Indian envoy in Pakistan into the reported abduction of two Hindu teenaged girls. Swaraj, while tagging a media report about the incident, tweeted that she has asked the Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan to send a report on the matter. Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry responded to her tweet, saying it was his country’s “internal issue”. In a Twitter post in Urdu on Sunday, Chaudhry said the prime minister has asked the Sindh chief minister to look into reports that the girls in question have been taken to Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab. He said the prime minister has also ordered the Sindh and Punjab governments to devise a joint action plan in light of the incident, and to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents from happening again. The Hindu community in Pakistan has carried out massive demonstrations calling for strict action to be taken against those responsible, while reminding Prime Minister Khan of his promises to the minorities of the country. Last year, Khan during his election campaign had said his party’s agenda was to uplift the various religious groups across Pakistan and said they would take effective measures to prevent forced marriages of Hindu girls. Rights activist Jibran Nasir tweeted that the sisters were converted at the Dargah Barchundi Sharif and were taken to Rahim Yar Khan in Punjab following their marriages. Hindus form the biggest minority community in Pakistan. According to official estimates, 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan. Majority of Pakistan’s Hindu population is settled in Sindh province. According to media reports, approximately 25 forced marriages take place every month only in Umerkot district in Sindh province.last_img read more

Ohio State honors veterans with Military Appreciation nights

Ohio State junior defenseman Matt Miller (50) warms up against Minnesota in the Schottenstein Center for Military Appreciation Night on Feb. 15. Ohio State lost 4-3. Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternWhile other hockey coaches may have spent their pregame drawing X’s and O’s on a whiteboard, Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik instead presented a $13,000 check to the United Heroes League to provide sports equipment and game tickets to military families across the U.S. and Canada.Instead of looking up to a flag in the rafters during the national anthem, the hockey crowd saluted a 20-by-36-foot garrison flag, unfurled by 41 Ohio State student veterans, military and ROTC members, honoring the military for Ohio State’s Military Appreciation Night. The Buckeyes’ Feb. 15 game against Minnesota was the second year in a row that the hockey team honored the armed forces, which Rohlik said was indicative of the team’s desire to recognize veterans and their sacrifices. “We’re pretty thankful to be able to do what we do because of what they do,” Rohlik said. Honoring the military has become a tradition at Ohio State, according to Mike Carrell, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services. The first recognitions came at basketball and football games, but is now branching out toward other sports, Carrell said. “With the start of our office in October 2011, we really began to include student veterans much more prominently with athletics,” Carrell said.Carrell said men and women who are serving or have served are invited and recognized for their engagement. The Ohio State Athletics’ Fan Experience and Promotion division sends out an announcement to all military-adjacent students before a sporting event. The Veteran Community Advocate program and Ohio State Athletics Fan Experience arrange all appreciation events, said Devin Zeisset, a veteran community advocate. Ohio State has roughly 2,200 student veterans, military dependents, military and ROTC members, and about 1,400 faculty members who have served in the armed forces. Those who are interested in an event RSVP to receive further information. The coordination is then done through a liaison with Ohio State ROTC. The Veteran Community Advocate program helps promote military participation for these occasions. Carrel said that since 2012, the participation has continued to improve year after year. The importance of honoring service members, especially during a hockey game, was not lost on members of the Ohio State team. Ronnie Hein, a junior forward, said he knows that the work of the armed forces impacts everyone at some level.“Whatever they do over there lets us come out here and play a game,” Hein said. The honor of representing the entire Ohio State veteran population comes from everyday student veterans. Zeissest said these events are meaningful to him. “It’s a humbling experience to have the athletic department manufacture these events for student veterans and military members in which we’re recognized by the fans, coaches and players,” Zeisset said. This past fall when Ohio State took on Nebraska on Nov. 3, 25 student veterans took the goal line after the first quarter to represent and honor the 2,200 student veterans at Ohio State. There will be 14 military appreciation games this fall and spring semesters, according to Chris Oswalt, a student Veteran Community advocate. There are also events called Scarlet and Gray Salutes, which honor military members, veterans and first responders from the community. Oswalt said Ohio State has about 40 Scarlet and Gray Salutes planned for the 2018-19 school year. The military appreciation has caught the attention of the student population as well. Nicolas Moore, a student veteran at Ohio State, said it feels good that veterans get the recognition they deserve. “It gives me a sense of joy to see that the hard work that veterans put in doesn’t go unnoticed by the leaders of Ohio State,” Moore said. “It’s nice to know that as a whole, veterans are appreciated here.” read more
